The library contains literature on the Tatra Mts and the regions of Podhale, Spisz and Orawa, the ethnography of Poland, Polish museums, and works on general subjects. The earliest items come from the donation of several dozen works on biology from Dr Tytus Chałubiński's library and several dozen works on ethnography and art from Dr Zygmung Gnatowski's collection. The first Museum director Juliusz Zborowski's donation of the whole of his collection now constitutes the main core of the library. The holdings are augmented as a result of purchases, exchange and donations.
The prints, manuscripts, iconographic material and documentation acquired by the Library-and-Archive Department corresponds in subject-matter to the Museum's general goals, its documentary, publishing and educational activities, and the needs of scholars and students of the problems of the region covered by the Tatra Museum's activities.

The departmental holdings include sets of books, periodical publications (serial publications and journals) and occasional publications, a cartographic collection, microfilms, music collections (records and scores), a collection of recordings, a collection of manuscripts, an archive of photography (positives, negatives and transparencies), technical documentation, newspaper cuttings and printed iconographic material.
